The Green Bay Packers season was derailed last season when franchise quarterback Aaron Rodgers missed roughly half the season due to a broken collarbone. The Packers went on to finish 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the first time in eight years. Rodgers is back, but he will be without reliable target Jordy Nelson. The Packers did bring in Jimmy Graham in the offseason and he looks to be a big addition to assist Davante Adams in the passing game. The Packers will have to work with a trio of young running backs with Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams, and Ty Montgomery.
The defense of the Packers was unable to step up their game and was inconsistent in the absence of Rodgers. Upgrading the secondary was the major focal point during the offseason after the defense finished 23rd against the pass allowing 237 yards per game. The departure of Damarious Randall and Morgan Burnett and the additions of Tramon Williams and Davon House create a new look secondary. Star linebacker Clay Matthews will once again lead the Packers’ attack up front. Even with a healthy Aaron Rodgers, the defense will need to improve in order to contend for a division title.
Watching the Packers
The Packers will be showcased on national broadcasts five times during the season. Packer fans wishing to catch national and regional televised Packer games can tune in to online streaming services such as Sling TV, fuboTV, and Playstation Vue to save monthly on their monthly cable bill.
With Rodgers as quarterback, the Packers will always compete for a playoff berth and beyond. The question is how far he can take the Packers before the defense will have to step up and make plays. The schedule is manageable out of the gate with the toughest contest early on being a home game against division foe Minnesota. The schedule gets more challenging with road games against the L.A. Rams, New England, Seattle, and Minnesota. A quick start out of the gate will be crucial to get back to the playoffs.
2018 Prediction: 11-5 & 2nd in NFC North
The Packers could be without a crucial component of their defense to start the year as linebacker Jake Ryan went down with a major knee injury. Ryan was a tremendous asset for the Packers’ defense recording 81 tackles last season, and his potential absence would be costly.
